verbena flower or Verbena officinalis L. is a perennial plant of the Verbenaceae family. The flowers are grouped in bunches or bouquets. The size of each flower is medium and its colors are varied: red, white, purple, pink and bicolor.
This edible flower hardly contributes with aroma or flavor, so in the kitchen it is perfect to add in salads or as a decoration. With the foods that combines perfectly are: meats, seafood, salads and pastries. We could said that it is a very versatile flower in the kitchen.
The medicinal properties of this edible flower date back to antiquity. It is considered that it can be used for diseases such as gout, paralysis, headaches. Formerly it was also used against the bites of snakes and other poisonous reptiles.
As a curious fact about this edible flower, in Germany they considered that this flower had magical properties, that is why on the night of San Juan in the neck this flower was hung and they danced around the bonfire. For this reason, in many places in Spain it is called the “San Juan herb”.
